The Walking Dead's Most Impactful Deaths, Ranked

Steven and Régine revisit a selection of The Walking Dead 's most gruesome, shocking, and emotionally devastating deaths in a tier-list discussion spanning the show's earlier seasons through the Pike Massacre. Their rankings consider more than how brutal a death looks: they weigh its emotional impact, importance to the group, and whether the story makes the loss matter.

In this episode: The deaths that changed the group: Lori's prison C-section, Shane's death, Hershel's execution, and Glenn's death lead to conversations about grief, character development, and the consequences that ripple through the survivors. When a death doesn't pay off: Noah's revolving-door death and Beth's sudden death prompt questions about how much their storylines ultimately mattered.

Children in the apocalypse: Lizzie and Micah's tragic storyline and Sophia's reveal explore some of the show's darkest moments and Carol's transformation. Gruesome versus meaningful: The hosts debate deaths including the Governor, Dale, Abraham, Sasha, Merle, Tyrese, Otis and others, asking whether shock value is enough to earn a high ranking.

Why Glenn's death hit so hard: Steven wonders why so many viewers couldn't accept Glenn's loss. Régine points to the character's long history, his relationship with Maggie, and the audience's emotional investment.

Watching then versus watching now: The conversation considers how weekly viewing, bingeing, and changing television conventions can affect the way a major death lands. The Pike Massacre: Alpha's display of severed heads at the fair stands out as one of the show's most shocking later moments.

The conversation also touches on representation through the treatment of Tyrese and T-Dog, and the show's tendency to move quickly past certain deaths. Spoilers: This episode discusses major character deaths and story developments throughout The Walking Dead , including events from Seasons 1–9.
