Ministry through Music with Special Guest Billy Gaines

On this episode of The Vision TV Show, Day Gardner joins Pastor Jearlyn Dennie, Destiny Yarbrough and Pastor LeaAnn Pendergrass in welcoming Billy Gaines, a two-time Dove Award-winning gospel recording artist, songwriter, speaker and minister whose Christian music career spans more than four decades. Gaines shares how his love of singing began in Richmond, Virginia, where his mother first noticed his voice as he sang along with Ray Charles on the radio.

His strongest early musical foundation, however, came from singing hymns beside his mother at the piano. Gaines explains that gospel music was not merely a career choice but a calling.

After becoming a Christian at age 16, he asked God what to do with his life and felt directed toward music. Rather than describing himself as a traditional preacher, he views each song as a three-minute sermon—an opportunity to communicate biblical truth clearly and repeatedly.

His songwriting grows from personal experience interpreted through Scripture, while his concerts begin with prayer, humility and a desire for God's presence to accomplish more than talent alone could achieve. Offering guidance to aspiring artists, Gaines urges them to begin with genuine dedication and a clear sense of calling.

Success, he says, means little if a person succeeds at something God never assigned. He encourages musicians to seek divine direction instead of relying solely on their own plans.

The hosts also ask whether singers can improve, prompting Gaines to recommend recording, listening and practicing so performers can recognize and correct pitch problems. Yet technique is not his ultimate measure: music matters most when it moves the listener and carries an anointing that leads to salvation, healing, deliverance and worship.

The conversation becomes personal as Gaines reflects on losing his mother in 1988. She had been his greatest supporter and once firmly discouraged him from abandoning music for the Air Force.

The very next day, he received a call about a record deal from Nashville, confirming that he should continue. Later, after moving to Nashville by faith and wondering whether the opportunity would work, he received distribution and publishing agreements with Lorenz Creative Services, which became connected with Benson Records.

These experiences taught him to look for evidence of God's faithfulness even when a dramatic breakthrough has not yet appeared. Gaines recalls meeting gospel artist Danniebelle Hall at the 1977 Gospel Fest in Hampton, Virginia, and being so nervous that he humorously mixed up the name of the group 2nd Chapter of Acts.

He also discusses his work with his late wife, Sarah, as Billy and Sarah Gaines. As Black artists in the inspirational gospel market, they helped open doors for others.

When asked whom Benson Records should sign, he immediately recommended Commissioned, whose members included Fred Hammond. Gaines says his next release will be grounded in the cross and the blood of Jesus, themes he believes contemporary Christian music needs to proclaim directly.

Rachelle Fletcher shares a song written with her daughter about freedom from fear, pain and shame through Jesus. Afterward, Gaines discusses an unexpected acting opportunity in a musical film, where he portrayed Moses and sang “God of the How and When.” The door opened after a service job brought him into contact with Kathie Lee Gifford, who later encouraged him to audition.

He also shares lines from “Other Side of This Trial,” written during a season of anxiety and fear. The song expresses confidence that God's hand will carry him across life's difficult river and make him a better man with a deeper history of divine deliverance.

Looking toward the next generation, Gaines urges gospel artists not to be ashamed of Scripture or obscure their message. Authentic communication should be direct, accurate and rooted in God's Word.

Asked about his desired legacy, he answers simply that he wants to be remembered as someone who trusted and loved God with all his heart. That musical legacy continues through his three children, who work as singers, songwriters, producers, arrangers and speakers.

He hopes for new opportunities to tour, while Pastor LeaAnn prays for fresh songs, open doors and blessing over his family and ministry. Gaines closes by encouraging discouraged viewers to trust God, remain surrendered and follow His purpose even when it differs from their own expectations.
