Witch Trials

This week on Next Take Podcast , Canada’s own Mikel and Tanyka explore the dark history of witch trials in Ireland, Switzerland, and Scotland, examining the fear, accusations, and persecution that shaped these chilling chapters of European history. The witch trials of Europe were not limited to the infamous events in Salem.

Across Ireland, Switzerland, and Scotland, accusations of witchcraft led to investigations, trials, imprisonment, torture, and executions—often driven by religious fears, political tensions, local disputes, and beliefs about supernatural forces.Ireland experienced considerably fewer witch trials than many other European countries, but its history still contains notable cases. One of the most significant was the Islandmagee witch trial of 1711 in County Antrim.

Nine people were prosecuted in two trials at Carrickfergus, making the case Ireland’s last witch trials conducted under a dedicated witchcraft law. Switzerland was one of the early centres of European witch persecution.

In the Swiss region of Valais, major persecutions began in 1428, decades before some of Europe’s better-known witch hunts. Historians have connected these persecutions partly to political and social conflicts, while emerging ideas about people making pacts with the Devil helped shape the developing European concept of witchcraft.

Scotland experienced witch hunting on an especially large scale. The Scottish Witchcraft Act was in force from 1563 to 1736, and University of Edinburgh researchers have identified 3,837 people accused of witchcraft during Scotland’s early-modern witch hunts.

Accusations often involved supposed harmful magic, encounters with the Devil, supernatural activity, illness, misfortune, and conflicts between neighbours.
