In Memory of Judge John Walter Carter: A Legacy of Justice, Integrity & Service
Welcome to another episode of The Silk Stocking Sisters Podcast . In this meaningful episode, Dr.
Canada remembers her dear friend, John Walter Carter, a Harlem native, attorney, and New York judge whose life reflected a deep commitment to justice and public service. Judge Carter was also a guest on an earlier episode of the podcast, where he discussed de facto and de jure segregation and their impact on public schools.
Born in 1947, Judge Carter grew up in Morningside Gardens with his brother, David. His father, civil rights attorney Robert L.
Carter, worked with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and played a role in the legal fight surrounding Brown v. Board of Education.
Judge Carter carried that history forward in his own way, building a distinguished legal career after graduating from City College and Columbia Law School. He served in the Manhattan District Attorneys Office for 14 years before becoming a judge, later serving in Brooklyn and at Bronx Supreme Court.
Dr. Canadas tribute highlights the man beyond the courtroom.
Judge Carter loved his family, the Yankees, Knicks, and Giants, music, travel, and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend whose kindness and sense of community meant so much to those who knew him.
This episode celebrates Judge Carters life and the lasting impression he left on others. His legacy is a reminder that the mark we leave is not only in our work, but in the relationships we build with those around us.
This episode is dedicated to Judge John Walter Carter, a dear friend whose life embodied justice, integrity, and service.
