Holmes , born Herman Webster Mudgett, one of the most infamous criminals of the late 19th century. Operating primarily in Chicago, Holmes became known not only for murder but also for fraud, deception, and elaborate financial schemes.

His story became closely associated with a mysterious three-story Chicago building later sensationalized as the “Murder Castle.” While popular accounts have described secret rooms, traps, and horrific methods of killing inside the building, historians have questioned many of these claims, noting that newspapers of the era often exaggerated Holmes’ crimes. What is known is that Holmes was eventually convicted of murdering his business associate Benjamin Pitezel and was executed in Philadelphia in 1896.
