In each episode, Angela, Bakari, and Andrew embark on a journey of reflection, taking stock of the news of the week and the country's road to the polls. Join us each week as we navigate the dance between past and present, weaving a narrative of hope, empowerment, and the unyielding strength that defines the journey to reclaim 'Native Land.' A Nation on Fire Tour: Voting Rights Under Attack

July 26, 2026 · 29m

There is a coordinated effort to suppress the votes of Black folks. SCOTUS weakened the Voting Rights Act in their Louisiana v. Calais decision, and redistricting has papered over majority-Black districts. However, courts have prevented the Trump administration from limiting mail-in ballots, and there are measures to be taken to restore and protect our right to vote. Join Bakari Sellers and guests for this special bonus segment from the NAACP’s 117th National Convention. A Nation on Fire Tour: Protecting Black America

Jul 23 · 36m

From the NAACP convention in Chicago: the cases of Nolan Wells and Karmelo Anthony have raised concerns about the treatment of Black youth and the narratives that shape public perception before due process can take its course. Black communities question whether the systems designed to protect them are working fairly and equitably.    From the stage, Larry Hoover’s mother makes a plea for his clemency. Larry is a reformed man who served 50+ years in prison for his role founding the Gangster Disciples.    Remember the church protest in Minneapolis that got Don Lemon and Georgia Fort arrested? They aren’t the only ones facing B.S. charges… We’ll hear from student activist Jerome Richardson.   And civil rights attorney Ben Crump has represented the family of Nolan Wells, George Floyd, Trayvon Martin, and others. Crump pushes these cases forward even after national attention has moved on.  Join hosts Angela Rye, Bakari Sellers, and Andrew Gillum for episode 141 of Native Land Pod, in conjunction with the 117th NAACP National Convention. Jul 21 · 32m

Why do some fights for justice hit a wall while others succeed?    That’s the central premise of civil rights leader Rashad Robinson’s new book, From Presence to Power (out July 28th). Marches and social media fads alone do not gain the needed leverage over politicians and corporate executives to make change. Rip Lindsay? the Real Threat is the Consolidation of Power | Angela Rye Solopod

Jul 14 · 12m

Trump has been doing his best to bypass Congress and the courts whenever he can. In this episode, we take stock of how far Trump has gone to consolidate power in the executive branch.    In a recent example of executive power expanding, SCOTUS granted the president the right to fire independent Federal commissioners. Trump then removed ALL the board members of the Election Assistance Committee, an independent committee established by Congress to assist States during election time.    One of Trump’s most important supporters in his efforts to become a de facto king was Senator Lindsay Graham, who passed away last weekend.    Want to ask Angela a question? Are Our Children Safe With Their All-white Friend Group? | Minipod

Jul 10 · 18m

18-year-old Nolan Wells was found dead after going missing while boating off the coast of Mississippi with a group of all-white friends. Nolan is Black, mixed race.    In a county that is 66% white, 19% Black, the white sheriff was quick to close the investigation into Nolan’s death and say there was no wrongdoing. The mother of one of the boys involved is a local judge, and she was quick to get on social media and echo the sheriff’s statement.   We’re not saying there was foul play. We are saying that the rush to claim ‘no foul play’ breeds mistrust in a racially sensitive case.    Our hearts go out to the Wells family in their quest for answers.    GoFundMe for the Well’s Family: https://www.gofundme.com/f/in-loving-memory-of-nolan-xavier-wells If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod.    Welcome home y’all!    —--------- We want to hear from you!
