What happened to the girl who always had something to say? She was curious, expressive, and comfortable being seen.

Then she entered rooms where few people shared her background, culture, or life experience. She began studying the room, measuring her words, and waiting for permission to use the voice that once came naturally.

In this episode of Mosaic Sparks™with Lesley George examines what happens when being the only one causes a woman to question the very qualities that earned her a place in the room. The conversation is inspired by filmmaker May el Toukhy, the only female director among 21 filmmakers in the main competition at the 2026 Venice Film Festival.

Her film, Woman Unknown , received the Golden Lion, the festival’s highest honor. Lesley connects this historic achievement with lessons from Disney and Pixar’s WALL E , a robot who continued working when every other robot of his kind had stopped.

Although WALL E appeared small and outdated, he carried the living plant that represented humanity’s future. His story reminds us that the person who looks least like the expected leader may carry the perspective, idea, or solution that everyone else has overlooked.

Lesley also shares her experience as the only Black woman serving on a nonprofit board. There were moments when she remained quiet and waited for permission, even though she had earned her place at the table.

Over time, she released the story that made her question herself, reclaimed the voice she had used freely as a child, and eventually became the organization’s first Black president. Through the O.W.N. lessons, I challenge women to own their place in the room, let go of their need for permission, and name their gift so they can use it.
