The Power of Podcasting in Education and Learning

September 4, 2024

The idea that podcasting is primarily entertainment undersells what a significant portion of the medium's audience is actually using it for. Survey after survey of podcast listeners finds that learning something new is among the most common reasons people listen. The educational podcast has become a legitimate and important part of how many people continue their education well beyond formal schooling.

Audio is uniquely well-suited to learning in certain ways. It works during otherwise dead time: the commute, the run, the household tasks that require physical attention but not mental focus. This means that people who feel they have no time to read or watch educational content can still absorb significant amounts of learning through audio. The accessibility advantage of podcasting for education is real and meaningful.

The conversation format is also pedagogically underappreciated. When an expert explains a concept to a genuinely curious interviewer in real time, the result often captures something that a scripted lecture or a written explainer misses: the way ideas connect to other ideas, the places where even experts feel uncertainty, the examples that come up naturally when someone is actually thinking rather than reciting. The best educational podcasts are essentially dialogues that make sophisticated ideas accessible without dumbing them down.

Formal education institutions have been slower to embrace podcasting than the independent education space, but the trend is clearly moving toward more integration. Universities use podcasts to supplement course materials, make guest lectures accessible beyond a single classroom, and build communities among students in online programs who might otherwise feel isolated. K-12 education is finding uses for podcasting both as a consumption tool for students and as a creation tool that develops communication and research skills.

Professional continuing education is one of the most valuable applications of educational podcasting. Doctors, lawyers, educators, designers, engineers, and professionals in virtually every field can find podcasts that cover developments and debates in their domain at a level of specificity that general media cannot provide. The ability to stay current in a rapidly changing field through audio, consumed during otherwise unproductive time, is a genuine competitive advantage for the professionals who take advantage of it.

Language learning through podcasting deserves specific mention. Shows produced for language learners at different proficiency levels have become a significant part of how people learn to understand a new language in a natural, conversational register rather than the formal register of textbooks. The combination of comprehensible input and real-world vocabulary and idiom makes these shows genuinely effective learning tools.

The educators and subject matter experts who have built podcast audiences by sharing their knowledge generously have demonstrated that people will seek out serious, substantive content if it is presented in a way that respects their intelligence and fits into the texture of their daily life. The format imposes the discipline of accessibility without requiring the dumbing-down that so much educational content mistakes for accessibility.
