The Future of Podcasting

August 6, 2025

Podcasting has been declared dead or obsolete so many times that the predictions themselves have become a kind of joke among people who have been in the medium for a while. First it was going to be killed by satellite radio. Then by YouTube. Then by short-form video. Each time, the medium adapted and grew. Understanding why it keeps surviving, and what genuine change looks like, is more interesting than the cyclical death proclamations.

The durability of podcasting comes from something fundamental about audio as a medium. You can listen to audio while doing other things: driving, exercising, cooking, cleaning. That multitasking compatibility is not something visual media can replicate without significant compromise. As long as people have commutes, workouts, and household tasks, there will be demand for audio content that makes that time feel worthwhile.

The subscription economy is reshaping podcast economics in ways that are still playing out. Platforms like Spotify are investing heavily in exclusive content and creator monetization tools. Apple has its own subscription tier. Independent operators like Supercast and Patreon provide infrastructure for podcasters to monetize directly from their audiences. The shift away from advertising as the sole revenue model is real and is likely to continue as audiences demonstrate willingness to pay for content they value.

AI-assisted production is already changing the economics of podcast creation. Transcription, which used to take hours, now takes minutes. Editing tools that can remove filler words automatically, or that allow you to edit audio by editing text, are becoming standard parts of the workflow. Translation and dubbing tools are opening podcasts to non-English-speaking audiences in ways that were not practical before. These changes are lowering the production cost of podcasting and enabling smaller creators to produce at higher quality.

Discovery remains one of the medium's persistent challenges. Finding podcasts through search and social recommendation has improved but is still significantly worse than finding videos on YouTube or articles on Google. Whatever platform or technology improves podcast discovery will unlock substantial audience growth for shows that are currently hard to find. This is one of the more significant open problems in the industry.

The video podcast format, which captures both audio and video of the recording, is increasingly mainstream. Spotify's push into video podcasts and YouTube's growing podcast presence reflect a recognition that many listeners also want to watch, especially with clips distributed on social media. This is not replacing audio; it is adding a layer that extends reach across more contexts.

The core of what makes podcasting work, a voice in your ear sharing something true and interesting, is not going to change regardless of what the technology and business models look like. The medium will evolve. The formats will diversify. But the intimate connection between a host and a listener who chose to spend an hour with them is the thing that will continue to drive the medium forward, whatever shape it takes.
