Podcasting's Global Expansion: What We're Seeing in Africa and Asia

March 30, 2026

The global podcast conversation has been dominated by American and, to a lesser extent, British production and consumption patterns since the medium's founding. But the growth markets for podcasting in the coming decade are not in countries with already-saturated media landscapes; they're in places where smartphones have rapidly expanded internet access, where radio traditions make audio a culturally natural format, and where the content created by and for local communities has been dramatically underserved by globally-distributed English-language media.

Nigeria has emerged as one of the most significant podcast markets on the African continent. A young, largely urban, smartphone-equipped population with a vibrant culture of storytelling, entrepreneurship, and political engagement has produced a podcast ecosystem covering everything from business and tech to comedy, Afrobeats culture, and investigative journalism. South Africa, Kenya, and Ghana have robust local podcast communities in multiple languages. The African podcasting network landscape is developing infrastructure, local ad sales, regional directories, cross-country collaboration; that didn't exist five years ago.

In Asia, India represents perhaps the single largest untapped podcast audience on the planet. With hundreds of millions of smartphone users and a deeply established culture of audio storytelling through radio, the conditions for podcast adoption are favorable. The challenge has been language diversity, India has dozens of major languages, and podcast content that serves Hindi speakers doesn't serve Tamil or Bengali speakers. Shows produced in regional languages are growing, but the infrastructure for discovery and monetization lags English-language production.

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, presents similar dynamics: high smartphone penetration, strong radio listening cultures, and growing podcast production communities. For creators and organizations thinking about where podcasting's future is being built, these are the regions to watch. The creators building audiences in Lagos and Jakarta and Chennai right now are building the future of global audio.
