How to Start a Podcast: A Step-by-Step Guide

September 28, 2022

The idea of starting a podcast feels overwhelming to a lot of people who have been thinking about it for months or years. The reality is that the technical barriers are lower than they have ever been. What takes time and thought is not the technology. It is the foundational decisions about what your show will be and who it is for.

Before you think about equipment or software, spend time on your premise. What is your show about? Who is it for? What will it give listeners that they cannot easily get somewhere else? These questions do not need to have perfect answers before you start, but you need working answers. A show without a clear premise is a show that struggles to find an audience because there is no easy way to describe it to potential listeners.

Once you have a premise, choose a format. Solo episodes where you share your perspective, interview episodes where you talk with guests, or co-hosted conversations where two or more people discuss a topic are the main options. Each has different demands. Choose the one that plays to your actual strengths and that you can realistically sustain week after week.

Equipment comes next. The minimum you need is a microphone and a way to record. A USB microphone like the Blue Yeti or Audio-Technica ATR2100 runs between fifty and a hundred and fifty dollars and produces audio quality that is more than acceptable for most shows. Plug it into your computer, download a free recording app like Audacity, and you can record your first episode tonight.

Your recording environment matters as much as your microphone. Hard surfaces cause echo. A room with carpet, soft furniture, and fabric on the walls will sound dramatically better than a bare office or kitchen. Recording in a closet surrounded by hanging clothes is a genuinely effective technique that many professional podcasters use. Close the windows to block outside noise. Turn off fans and air conditioning if possible while recording.

Choose a podcast host before you record your launch episodes. The host stores your audio and generates your RSS feed. You will need this before you can submit your show to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other directories. Pick from among the reputable options: Buzzsprout, Captivate, Transistor, or similar, and pick based on your budget and which interface feels most intuitive to you.

Create your cover art and write your show description. These are what potential listeners see before they hear a word of your show, and they matter more than most people expect. The cover art should be readable at the small size it appears in podcast apps. The description should clearly explain what the show is about and who it is for, without being vague or clever.

Record at least three episodes before you launch. This gives new listeners something to binge and makes the show feel established. Edit each one, even lightly. Export as MP3. Upload to your host.

Submit your show to directories. From your hosting dashboard, find the RSS feed URL and use it to submit to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other directories. Allow a few days to a week for approval.

Tell people. Your first audience will almost certainly come from people who already know you. Tell your network, post on social media, send an email. Be specific about what the show is and why they should listen. Then keep recording. The show becomes what it is through the making of it, not just the planning.
