Charlie Hudson never set out to make history. She joined the Army to pay for law school, signed up for a two-year commitment, and planned to write on the side.
Twenty-two years later, she retired as a Lieutenant Colonel with a record of firsts she describes as entirely unplanned. In her words, she was an inadvertent pioneer.
She was the first female officer in the history of the 19th Maintenance Battalion in Giessen, Germany, the first woman to command a maintenance company at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and the first woman to command the Leghorn Army Depot in Livorno, Italy. She took on jobs above her rank, earned the respect of senior officers who didn’t know what to do with her, and led a company of more than 300 soldiers without a single AWOL.
In this conversation, Charlie and I talk about what it means to lead when there is no template, how she stayed authentic under constant scrutiny, and the advice a captain gave her that she has carried ever since: don’t ever decide to quit when you’re tired. She also shares how she mentored women who later became general officers, and why she believes you should walk into every room like you belong there.
Then we talk about her reinvention. After retiring, Charlie became an author of mystery and cozy fiction featuring strong women in nontraditional roles, and she co-authored a book on the HMS Britannic with renowned shipwreck explorer Richie Kohler.
