Separating Connection from Consumption: Unmasking Disordered Eating and Generational Guilt

What happens when our cultural systems turn food into a mechanism for emotional control? How do we separate the profound love of our culinary traditions from the toxic cycles of disordered eating?

In this deeply vulnerable, eye-opening episode of the Black and Diagnosed Podcast, host Gerron Scott welcomes social worker and mental health therapist Shatera Hillyer into the Sanctuary. Together, they take off the clinical mask to confront a topic that media representations consistently ignore: how disordered eating manifests within the Black community, specifically among Black women and girls.

Shatera draws on her unique professional evolution—from a VCU theater performance graduate and professional actress to a certified personal trainer at a young adult mental health center, and ultimately to a clinical therapist. She systematically dismantles the white-centric media portrayal of eating disorders, detailing why anorexia nervosa is heavily highlighted while the prevalence of binge eating disorder and bulimia in Black spaces is routinely dismissed as mere "stress eating" or a "lack of discipline".

Shatera sheds light on the devastating intersection of the "Strong Black Woman" trope and emotional suppression, illustrating how over-functioning leaves women depleted, forcing them to use dietary restriction or bingeing as a desperate attempt to reclaim environmental control. This episode shifts into an unscripted, breathtaking level of transparency when Gerron opens his own vault.

Triggered by Shatera's clinical breakdown of body image, Gerron shares a raw, live realization regarding his own journey as an amputee. He bravely verbalizes his hidden battles with body dysmorphia, the exhaustion of navigating public spaces where people stare at his physical differences, and the intense frustration of managing rapid weight fluctuations caused by psychiatric medications.

He also revisits his rock-bottom diagnostic crossroad with bipolar disorder, reinforcing the power of radical acceptance.. 🔍 Key Topics Unmasked in This Episode: * 🔬 Dismantling the Thin, White Silhouette: Shatera explains how medical history and Hollywood portrayals pathologize eating disorders exclusively through a white lens, leaving Black individuals struggling with BED and bulimia invisible and undiagnosed. * 🎭 The "Strong Black Woman" Control Loop: An analysis of how societal expectations force Black women to function as tireless caregivers, leading to severe self-neglect and a subconscious turn toward food or restriction to manufacture a sense of control. * 🍲 Separating Connection from Consumption: How to actively honor Black culinary traditions, family reunions, and food as an expression of love while maintaining strict boundaries around your personal fullness cues and health goals. * 🩼 The Somatic Reality of the Amputee: Gerron unmasks the long-term emotional labor of living with an amputated limb, processing body dysmorphia, and the subconscious desire to mask physical differences at the beach. Join the Conversation 🌿 The garden is always growing, and your voice belongs here.
